Stener® is a naturally occurring bile acid used to treat various hepatobiliary disorders.

Stener® 150 mg Tablet: Each film-coated tablet contains Ursodeoxycholic Acid BP 150 mg.
Stener® 300 mg Tablet: Each film-coated tablet contains Ursodeoxycholic Acid BP 300 mg.

Stener® is indicated for:
The treatment of primary biliary cirrhosis.
The dissolution of radiolucent cholesterol gallstones in patients with a functioning gallbladder.

Primary biliary cirrhosis: The recommended adult dosage is 13–15 mg/kg/day in four divided doses with food.
Dissolution of gallstones: The recommended adult dosage is 6–12 mg/kg/day, either as a single nighttime dose or in divided doses.

Stener® should not be used in patients hypersensitive to any components of the product.

Ursodeoxycholic acid is not suitable for the dissolution of radio-opaque gallstones and should not be used in patients with a non-functioning gallbladder.

There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women; therefore, the drug should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Care should be taken when administering ursodeoxycholic acid to nursing mothers.

Oestrogenic hormones, oestrogen-rich contraceptive agents, and clofibrate increase hepatic cholesterol secretion and promote cholesterol gallstone formation, which may counteract the effects of ursodeoxycholic acid.

Possible side effects include:
Nausea
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Gallstone calcification
Pruritus

Overdosage with ursodeoxycholic acid may cause diarrhea, which should be treated symptomatically. Liver function tests should also be monitored.
